2009 SAC Exhibit Opening

In honor of the OIE's Native American Student Artist Competition winners, a traveling art exhibit will be displayed at museums, galleries, and organizations throughout the U.S. The 2009 exhibit will kick off the national tour at the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, DC. more

Facts from NIES
The 2007 National Indian Education Study (NIES) was conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics on behalf of OIE. Part I focuses on the performance of AI/AN 4th- and 8th-graders on the 2007 National Assessment of Educational Progress in reading and math. Part II presents information about the educational, home, and community experiences of the students represented in Part I.

NIES 2007 Part I: Reading

In city schools, AI/AN 4th graders score higher in reading than Black and Hispanic peers but lower in rural schools. more

NIES 2007 Part II: Socioeconomic and Home Factors

Overall, 77% of AI/AN students reported that at one or both of their parents has at least a high school education, 32% reported that a parent had graduated from college. more

SAC Winners and 2009 Exhibit Schedule Now Available
2009 SAC 1st place winner

Congratulations to the Office of Indian Education's 2009 Native American Student Artist Competition (SAC) winners! For a complete list of the 2009 SAC winner’s, please visit O’ai’ee’s Activity Center.

The SAC is an annual event that celebrates the values and documents the successes of education in American Indian and Alaska Native communities.The competition was open to all American Indian and Alaska Native students in Grades Pre-K through 12. A total of 604 students from 30 states submitted works in a variety of media.

Entries related to the 2009 theme Tradition is My Life, Education is My Future and reflected the promise and importance of pursuing an education for Native youth. Submissions were judged in six different grade levels. Prizes were awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each grade levels for both art and writing categories, and a certificate of participation was sent to each student.

2009 Exhibit
The 2009 Student Artist Competition Exhibit will open at the U.S. Department of Education on July 21. This event kicks off a national tour, during which the exhibit can be viewed at galleries, museums, and organizations across the U.S.

2008 Traveling Exhibit
The 2008 winning entries will be available for viewing at the Trickster Gallery in Schaumberg, IL, June 6 - Aug. 29, 2009 and at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in Washington, DC, Sep 5 - Sep 30, 2009.
